Children? I want it all for me! The sweet felt objects that resemble trees and twigs are my favourite, for example this pencil case:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/028/0/5172000/il_570xN.591047447_29x8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/028/0/5172000/il_570xN.591047447_29x8.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
How sweet is that? And what would I put in this pouch you ask? Why, some pencils in these lovely pencil cozies, of course!:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/061/1/5172000/il_570xN.779493153_iuag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/061/1/5172000/il_570xN.779493153_iuag.jpg" width="213" /></a></td></tr>

Finally, perhaps best of all... is this Giant Sequoia pillow:<br />

Perhaps I'm homesick for the great trees of western Canada... or perhaps I just like cute felt woodland plush toys. Probably both!Cory Cuthbertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12000939620226412700noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653484247438976642.post-5766668725414691542015-08-15T13:35:00.000+01:002015-08-15T13:35:19.070+01:00My lonely little shop...I keep shutting down my poor shop, so I can dedicate 100% of my time to my thesis. The last few months were very busy, and I had to take another break.<br />
<br />
But I'm back again! And I notice each time I return, I'm afraid I will never make another sale, and people won't like my jewellery anymore, and I'll have to pack it all away for good and wistfully remember all the good times between me and my little saw and spotlight desk lamp.<br />
<br />
But no! I have lovely customers that I am making orders for already. It makes me so happy. Thank you, wonderful book jewellery loving people!<br />

<br /></div>
It's been a long, difficult Winter/Spring season, where I've been swamped with PhD work including running a pilot study and finishing a draft of 4 chapters of my thesis to hand in. I shut my little Etsy shop for quite a bit of this time, but have come back in the last few weeks with enthusiasm! New business cards, purchased! Organize workdesk! Uploaded new photos! And, THREE new items have been released in my shop.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/065/1/5955347/il_570xN.762804057_7dul.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/065/1/5955347/il_570xN.762804057_7dul.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/231172739/stack-of-books-earrings-penguin-colours?ref=shop_home_feat_4">New Vintage Penguin Style Stack of Books Earrings</a><br /><br /></td></tr>

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/066/0/5955347/il_570xN.762811995_8xa4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/066/0/5955347/il_570xN.762811995_8xa4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/064/1/5955347/il_570xN.762684758_ghxo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/064/1/5955347/il_570xN.762684758_ghxo.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 12.8000001907349px;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/231180938/bookshelf-on-fire-hunger-games-bookshelf?ref=listing-shop-header-2">Bookshelf on Fire: Hunger Games Bookshelf Necklace</a><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
These include a new 'stack of book' style earrings in vintage Penguin design, a bookshelf perfect for a teacher, and a Hunger Games themed bookshelf which I've called 'Bookshelf on Fire', since that's what it looks like - the bookshelf itself is black, overlayed with vermillion, white, and gold paint to make it look like flames shooting out of the inside. On the shelves are an arrow, a little loaf of bread, and a pendant on the top shelf.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I'm back to work in my corner bedroom workshop now - intermittently reading papers and writing my thesis. But the main message is, I'm back!</div>

<a href="http://www.goteamkate.com/">Go Team Kate!</a> is a fantastic blog run by mummy Shanell, raising awareness, advocating and educating about autism. It's an intense and honest exploration surrounding the issues of family and interacting with a world that doesn't always facilitate the easiest of times when you're a young little one with autism. But Shanell's words are engaging and entertaining, and plus she features a ton of great products on her blog, with chances to win them in giveaways that raise money for things like a service dog for Kate! Check it out and you might win something - or at least learn about a lovely little girl!<br />

I just made my first sale to Trinidad... that's exciting! <br />
I've never done this before, but I thought it'd be a good challenge and a way to practice writing - I'm participating in NaNoWriMo 2014! NaNoWriMo means National November Writing Month, and is an international online group of people that for one month ban together and lend support, and write 50,000 words of a first draft of a novel. See <a href="http://nanowrimo.org/">nanowrimo.org</a> for yourself if you find that interesting and haven't heard about it before!<br />
<br />
I've had a story idea (haven't we all) knowcking around for a year or so, and hey, don't we all need something fun like this to distract us from all our other commitments? I have a 50,000 word thesis upgrade due in May, so I might as well practise writing 50,000 words in one month, so I can write 50,000 more over the course of 6.<br />
<br />
Anyone else out there participated in NaNoWriMo before? Will you be doing it this year? Words of advice? Words of warning?Cory Cuthbertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12000939620226412700noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653484247438976642.post-14187420849963901102014-09-26T10:51:00.001+01:002014-09-26T10:51:50.161+01:00Chameleon NecklaceThis is so so so cute (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/166820066/chameleon-necklace-hello-dodo-laser-cut?ref=fp_item&aref=13176906014">click here for Etsy listing</a>):<br />

I found this lovely documentary from the CBC on the unique aspects of Canadian English. It was really interesting! I had read a book on this same topic last year, and they covered some of the same points - regional vocabulary, vowel differences, intonation, some grammar - Canadian English seems so close to American English at first glance, but if you delve into it you can find a lot more that's unique than just 'eh'! :)Cory Cuthbertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12000939620226412700noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653484247438976642.post-25750846793223169252014-09-09T09:00:00.000+01:002014-09-10T19:24:36.644+01:00Hunting for backpacks<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>

I've been surprised at the backpacks listed on Etsy - not surprised that there is such a great range, which I expected, but that many are quite affordable, too! September is of course back to school for many, but for us university kids it's often late September early October. So I have only now starting looking disdainfully at my 7 year old detachable day bag that <br />
<a name='more'></a>zips on to my travel backpack that I have been using as a regular uni backpack, and my 5 year old ripped and mended cheap stained backpack I bought when I first moved to the UK - and am thinking it's time for something new. Here are some of my favourite backpack picks from Etsy:<br />

I have a brand new bookshelf necklace design that I've unveiled to coincide with the new Dr Who season. <span style="text-align: left;">I hope you like it! It's my Dr Who Bookshelf Necklace, and I've painted the</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="text-align: left;"> back to look like a Tardis!</span></div>
<span style="text-align: left;"> Flip </span>it around to the other side and it's the classic bookshelf necklace, but with a sonic screwdriver placed on the middle shelf :) I hope Dr Who fans enjoy this - I've sold two so far, but am getting mentally ready for Christmas orders. Dr Who fans seem to love their merchandise, and a quick search on Etsy shows so many amazing items people have crafted based on the show! Here are some favourites of mine:<br />

Ah, the life of a transient student. Never in one place for long. My husband and I are unpacking boxes in a new flat - and I really do mean new! That's exciting for the UK, where I've only lived in places originally built before central heating and indoor toilets were commonplace, so there's been much jiggery-pokery and everything doesn't always fit/work<br />
<a name='more'></a>quite right! Whereas this place... underfloor heating, double glazing, doors that open and close properly, <i>a built in wardrobe</i> (known as a closet to my countrymen)... it's heaven! We still live in Oxford, and we're still quite central, and so far we're very happy! Above is a photo of my new work area, sad and waiting to be filled with equipment...!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In fact, I'm now unpacked and everything's placed where it should be. I even sat down for a few hours yesterday evening and today, to make a few orders - unfortunately, I used the new oven, which I'm not used to, and ended up burning a bunch of Fimo items!! Oops. I'll have to do those over again tomorrow... but I'm so happy to be back from a summer away (I was in France again on an archaeological excavation), that I don't mind tediously forming 6 more identically shaped squares out of the Fimo colour I've found is almost used up....</div>

Vanessa Lowry runs a blog called Art as Worship, which interviews artists and asks them questions pertaining to their art and spirituality. I really enjoyed answering Vanessa's questions, as I'm an athiest myself, but have an interest in religion through my studies in<br />
<a name='more'></a> anthropology/archaeology.<br />
<br />
You can read the answers to I gave to Vanessa's here: <a href="http://artasworship.net/2014/02/18/cory-cuthbertson/">http://artasworship.net/2014/02/18/cory-cuthbertson/</a><br />
<br />
And have a read of the other interviews as well - it's interesting to see how people view their connection with their art! <br />
So you've opened an Etsy shop, and you've taken some beautiful pictures of your products to show people what you make - now you need to get the word out! Here are the best tools that I've found gets your word out and doesn't waste your time:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
5. Discussion Forums<br />
<br />
It may be a bit old school, but belonging to an active discussion forum, and sharing the link to your Etsy shop in your signature does get traffic. Plus the link may help you in the search engines. Just try not to join discussion forums for the sole purpose of peddling your wares... it doesn't get nice reactions, and it's against most forums' rules anyway!<br />
<br />
Another benefit to forums is that you can find people who can help you, or you can lend your support for others - you're already crafty, why don't you join a craft forum? Try craftsforum.co.uk or search for another, and start chatting! You can share pictures of your crafts, get ideas and hints, and maybe after you've contributed for a while, you can show people your website and get some interested people :)<br />
<br />
4. Blogging<br />
<br />
I probably shouldn't tell you all to go and blog when I'm not the best blogger myself, or even a really good one... but blogging is fun, and you do network with people and increase your webpage views! I tend to get between 5-10 people a day who come to my Etsy shop via this blog, and I'm not terribly active! I'd like to be better and I'm working on it...!<br />
<br />
<div>
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS_26mkt3J1fAfw8ogwk6IabxNHvQLow-d-o5c9b75UCflxpDM1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS_26mkt3J1fAfw8ogwk6IabxNHvQLow-d-o5c9b75UCflxpDM1" /></a>3. Facebook<br />
<br />
Make a Facebook page for your Etsy shop, and connect your shop so that people can like it from Etsy! Then you can communicate with your fans over Facebook. Build up your likes from a few 'like' ladders at first, but remember these aren't quality likes. Just keep chatting, and like other people's pages and posts that are interesting as well. Support them, share other things on Etsy that you see, and your fan base will grow! Post pictures of you at work, or new designs you are working on. Just don't repeatedly ask everyone on your friends' list to join... mention it once in a while if you want, but don't badger them! <br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
2. Pinterest<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.geekersmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twitterbackground_thumb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.geekersmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twitterbackground_thumb.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a>Pinterest is quickly becoming a more and more valuable way to bring people to visit your Etsy shop, as Etsy has a button to share your photos on their site - I recommend getting an account, and following a lot of other crafters and people who know and network with, and others who pin things that you like. Then make a board for all your creations and regularly add to them! Hopefully one will go a bit viral, and if you have been pinning them from your website or have your website written in the description, it could bring you loads of traffic! I owe my busy Christmas to a naughty pair of earrings that went viral on Pinterest...!!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
1. Twitter</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And finally, Twitter. Due to its huge user base, people can share your Etsy site or items with their friends, but you can also use it to advertise your shop. Just don't spend all your time sharing your links - tailor the message you send out with your links, and connect with people to build up your followers. Tweet and support other Etsy-ers as well. Make a few light-hearted posts, ask a few questions, and you'll probably have a bit of fun while you're tweeting away.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hopefully all these avenues of social media look helpful to you and your Etsy shop! Give one or more a try if you haven't already, and I hope you get more sales and views than before!</div>

US state takeover!!!In what is comparable to stamp collecting, and just as nerdy, I'm very interested geographically in where I've been lucky enough to sell my jewellery to! In past times I've looked through all the US states, marking them off and trying to complete the set. Last year I played this game, and found <a href="http://www.coryographies.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/a-look-back-at-2012-and-5-states-with.html">5 states that Coryographies hasn't sold to.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRg3QOno9as/UONrTeCsebI/AAAAAAAAAO4/j_IL19eKKn4/s640/united+states+map+2012.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRg3QOno9as/UONrTeCsebI/AAAAAAAAAO4/j_IL19eKKn4/s320/united+states+map+2012.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Well, I can tell you that I'm closer to completing the set by 4! That's right, I'm now only missing Hawaii, and then at least one person in each of the US states will be sporting some fashionable Coryographies jewellery. That's so cool!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/corybobory/usahwtf_zps6cc2d60b.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="347" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/corybobory/usahwtf_zps6cc2d60b.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So... come on, Hawaii. I know you guys like to read too!!</div>

Reflections on 2013Wow - and I mean wow, what a crazy Christmas. What started off as a bit of a slow Autumn turned crazy at the end of November, where I dove straight in to full-time Coryographies, and put my PhD studies on the shelf for a whole month, as these little earrings suddenly became my most popular product:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/036/1/5955347/il_570xN.526586630_qsub.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/036/1/5955347/il_570xN.526586630_qsub.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/91567095/stack-of-books-earrings-made-to-order?ref=shop_home_feat">Stack of books earrings by Coryographies</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually I had to close my shop just so I could concentrate on the orders at hand! I reopened my shop on January 2nd, and things seem to be back to normal now. It was a bit hectic and worrying at times, but luckily all the orders went out on the days they were planned. It looks like 3 orders to the US got lost in the mail and never showed, and 1 was very late but showed up right on Christmas eve!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all it was the most orders I've even done during the Christmas season, this being Coryographies' third Christmas. I also reached a milestone - I sold my 1000th item on Etsy! That calls for big cheers. But since it happened in the middle of the crazy December, I didn't have any time to celebrate!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So now, I've finally recovered, and as I say, things are back to normal. I can start going to the library again for studying, do my Etsy admin in the morning and make jewellery when I come back in the evenings. My husband, a fellow archaeology PhD, will be leaving for a month of fieldwork starting next week so I'll be all on my lonesome! Luckily, that means you'll probably see more posts from me as I become bored and start posting more...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been spending the morning looking back on 2013 (and trying to make sense of what just happened in December!), and looking at the places I was able to send my packages in 2013. Here are the countries I was lucky enough to send to, in a rough order of most to least:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>United States</li>
<li>United Kingdom</li>
<li>Canada</li>
<li>Australia</li>
<li>France</li>
<li>Germany</li>
<li>Switzerland</li>
<li>Sweden</li>
<li>Ireland</li>
<li>New Zealand</li>
<li>Italy</li>
<li>The Netherlands</li>
<li>Finland</li>
<li>Russia</li>
<li>Czech Republic</li>
<li>Romania</li>
<li>South Korea</li>
<li>Brazil</li>
<li>Peru</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hooray! All that was pretty exciting - I thin the most exciting was Peru, which I had never sold to before and sent my first ever order. I've always wanted to visit Peru after I read a book set there when I was a child, and when I was a child my family actually looked after a llama in our back yard for a couple of months. A funny story for another time... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well I'm off to tabulate if I've finally reached my goal of selling to all 50 states in the US. I know I haven't completely, as I've never sold to Hawaii. So... if you are from hawaii and reading this... please have a look at my cute book jewellery and see if you'd like it! Maybe I should make a unique discount for all Hawaiian customers? What do you think, 50% off to Hawaiian addresses???</div>

<a href="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/43/37/a9/4337a9f9ff9c9f56dbcfee03029f5318.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/43/37/a9/4337a9f9ff9c9f56dbcfee03029f5318.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I just sold a happy pair of earrings to another interesting place! Last week it was Iqaluit, Canada, in the Great White North, and this week it's the Isle of Man!<br />
<br />
I don't know much about the Isle of Man... except that I had a co-worker that was from there. And living there involves ferries. It's also where Manx cats are from... and the Manx language, which I believe no longer has any native speakers.<br />
<br />
So off I go to learn a bit and share about this latest interesting place...<br />
<br />
[as an aside, what should I call these posts about interesting places I sell to? I need a catchy name - any suggestions would be appreciated!]<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.iomguide.com/images/locateiom-big.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://www.iomguide.com/images/locateiom-big.gif" width="158" /></a>So in case you didn't know, the Isle of Man is an island between Britain and Ireland in the Irish Sea. It's a 'British Crown Dependency' which means it's sort of governed by the UK, but mostly does it's own thing. It's not considered part of the UK though. It was so confusing when I was studying for my life in the UK test about which countries made up the UK, and that this was different than Great Britain, and this was different from The British Isles, etc etc... and the crown dependencies like Jersey and Guernsey. And the Isle of Man. It's all very confusing, I don't know if British people get it either.<br />
<br />
The Isle of Man has a very long history and a good chunk of prehistory - it seems to have been inhabited since 6500 BC, back in the good ol Bronze age, which makes it nice and interesting. I like the Bronze age, they had some nice mounds and things :) Apparently it was never part of the Roman empire either, which is interesting.<br />
<br />
The Isle of Man's capital is Douglas, and is home to under 100,000 people.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/07/4d/50/074d5051dd1d7af1c93a4443ac31477c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/07/4d/50/074d5051dd1d7af1c93a4443ac31477c.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Isle of Man's capital, Douglas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My research shows I was right and the last native speaker of the Manx language died in 1974 - but luckily, it was well recorded, there even being a Bible written in Manx, and it is being revived in the media and in communities. Hooray! Manx is a Celtic language so it is closly related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic.<br />
<br />
...Oh my gosh, have you seen the Manx Loaghtan Sheep?? They have four, or sometimes SIX horns!! That's amazing! Six horns! It's like something out of a fantasy novel! There's some crazy things I learn when learning about these different places. I have to go just to see these sheep!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/0e/00/da/0e00dab389d0398f9cc68d076362c237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/0e/00/da/0e00dab389d0398f9cc68d076362c237.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Crazy Isle of Man sheep</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I went to look if any famous people come from the Isle of Man, and whaddya know! The BeeGees are from there! Who knew.<br />
<br />
Know we all know a fair bit about the Isle of Man. I hope you enjoyed this post!<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SbUNA2r3Fwc/Uoo3w3obkxI/AAAAAAAAAbw/c0PcSSFnnbU/s1600/startyourown.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SbUNA2r3Fwc/Uoo3w3obkxI/AAAAAAAAAbw/c0PcSSFnnbU/s320/startyourown.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Or, less than £30 if you're in the UK like me (...and that's £29.18 to be exact!)<br />
<br />
You want to set up a jewellery business, but you don't want the risk of putting lots of money into something before you start making a profit, do you! In this 'example business', we're going to start a polymer clay jewellery business with less than 30 pounds - and you'll be making money before you invest any more money! The money you make from the business is what you can reinvest and watch your business grow.<br />
<br />
I've had so much fun watching my own Etsy business grow, and one of the things I'm most proud of is how I never sunk a lot of money into my business before it started making profits.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I run <a href="http://www.coryographies.etsy.com/">Coryographies</a>, where I make jewellery out of wood and polymer clay (such as Fimo or Premo), which are relatively inexpensive materials, but really versatile too. But along with that there is also glue, jewellery findings, paintbrushes and paints, varnish, pliers, shaping tools, business cards, stamps, envelopes and packaging supplies. It can easily add up when I'm getting greedy on eBay and stocking up.<br />
<br />
For start up costs, one could also factor in a desk to work at, a digital camera for pictures to upload, a computer and an internet connection - but for this I'm going to assume that you already have access to these things(!)<br />
<br />
I want to share how you can easily purchase all the things you need to start making and selling (in this case, some polymer clay jewellery), that will set you off on the right track, and will turn a profit before you need to replenish anything, so you aren't taking any big financial risks with starting a business!<br />
<h2>
<b>The Shopping List</b></h2>

<div>
=£27.94!</div>
(prices above include shipping)<br />
*Tip: buy locally so that items arrive fast and there is more of a chance of getting free shipping!<br />
<br />
(You might be tempted to buy your supplies at Hobbycraft or a craft shop, but chances are eBay is cheaper. For experimenting, buying a small amount from a craft shop is ok, and you get to see the product and know exactly what you are buying, but after this it's cheaper buy in bulk from eBay sellers.)<br />
<h2>
Preparing Stock</h2>
So with all these items, you are ready to start making up a base stock for your shop. I would recommend having at least 10 items to put up in your shop. For choosing what to make, if you don't already have an idea, I will be writing an article soon on finding your niche. Until then learn how to use polymer clay by using Youtube or by finding things and ideas on Pinterest. Lets move on once you have some stock to sell!<br />

<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ClayandClasp?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Clay and Clasp</a> on Etsy sells very sweet earrings shaped as treats and other cute things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
(For beginning to work with polymer clay, I will also be writing an article soon that shows you how you can jump in and just use items from around your home so you don't have to buy any expensive specialist items - or anything more than just what you really need!)<br />
<h2>
Photographs</h2>
The next step is to photograph your items. Having good photos is hugely important to success on Etsy - it's the first thing your customers will see! You have to make people notice your item as something they might like to buy.<br />
<br />
Etsy allows you to have 5 pictures per item. Use natural light, and try to have one picture showing scale. Touch up the photos by increasing their brightness, contrast, and perhaps warmth or sharpness, using <a href="http://www.photobucket.com/">www.photobucket.com</a>.<br />
<h2>
Opening Your Shop</h2>
Opening an Etsy shop is really straightforward - don't be scared! Register and play around. Click on 'add new listing' to put items in your shop. Create one and copy the listing if this is easier, altering it and changing the name and photos for your item. Take care in decribing your item. Don't write an essay, but a cheerful and helpful description of your item that tells the customer everything they might want to know about the item. <br />
<br />
For search words, type in phrases you imagine someone would use to search for your item and similar items. For example, for my Antique Bookshelf Necklace I might use: <i>bookshelf necklace, antique, old books, book jewellery, miniature book, gift for teacher, librarian, author...</i><br />
<h2>
Pricing</h2>
Knowing at what price to set your item takes a bit of research - look around and see what similar items are set at on Etsy. What would you consider paying for your items? Think about what price a customer who liked your earrings would think was a fair price - and what would turn them off? A big mistake is to set your price too low. If you set a confident price your item will be more appealing. Too low makes it look like it's not that special.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.coryographies.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/how-to-price-your-handmade-items-often.html">Here is an article</a> I wrote earlier this year on pricing handmade items.<br />
<br />
Each listing on Etsy costs .20 cents USD, so if you upload 10 items, that is £1.24 we can add to our total cost so far, bringing it to £29.18. We're still under £30!<br />
<h2>
Next Steps</h2>
That's it, you've opened shop! Now is the time to think about marketing - social media, refining your search words, connecting with other sellers, making your own blog, refining your brand... you may want to read my article <a href="http://www.coryographies.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/unique-cheapest-or-best-my-3-rules-for.html">"Unique, Cheapest or Best: my 3 rules for success on Etsy"</a>, or stay tuned to Coryographies' blog where I'll be writing more on this topic. <br /></div>
I've just been made very happy by getting a purchase from Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada! I love a sale from somewhere interesting - and even though I'm from Canada, Iqaluit to me sounds exotic and wild :) It is the capital of the Territory of Nunavut, in the north east of Canada. It's a relatively new Territory, I sort of remember it's formation when I was a kid - when the Northwest Territories split into two. I've always wanted to visit the Canadian north... the wild landscapes and small communities sound really attractive. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So off I go to Pinterest and Wikipedia to see what I can find out about Iqaluit and Nunavit to share with you all...<br />

<div>
Oooh, so the creation of Nunavut happened in 1999, and it was the first big change to happen to the Canadian political map since Newfoundland joined Canada in the 40s. I can sort of remember this happening actually. Nunavut includes the gigantic islands such as Baffin Island and Ellesmere Island. The population is under 32,000! Mostly made up of Inuit communities. It is also the northernmost permanently habited place in the world. Impressive!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Iqaluit used to be called Frobisher Bay. It has a few interesting facts - it's a pretty little city, with a population under 9,000, but with another city in Greenland, it hosted the first Arctic Winter Games held in 2002. One of the G7 summit meetings in 2010 was also held there!<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You won't find many trees in Iqaluit, as it's too cold. Today the temperature is a balmy -13 degrees Celcius!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

A traditional piece of Inuit culture is throat singing. Here is a video to learn a bit about it and see what it is like:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div>
I think my favourite thing about the Canadian far north is the beautiful Inuktituk script. Inuktitut is a widely spoken Inuit language, and the writing is a syllabic system that looks like this:</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've been reading around the city's official page, and now I want to visit. Hmm. I wonder what their tourism is like?</div>
